Fallen
When Buffy Summers woke up tangled in her sheets, a sheen of sweat glistening on her pale body, she wondered if anyone else had ever had to suffer this torment or whether she was once again alone. That was what had scared her initially about being a slayer, the fact that she would be the only one capable of it. It wasn't like those problem pages where people were told it was okay, they weren't the only one this was happening to.
Buffy was. Had been at least, up until her first death. That was another problem she suspected as being solely hers, having multiple deaths. The count was up to two now and deep down she expected there to be at least one more pre-death before the curtain finally fell.
There had been no light shimmering on the horizon when the Master had sunk his teeth into her neck before throwing her to drown in a mere puddle. Death then had been like a blackout, not like when she had found herself in Heaven. It made up for every single thing had had gone wrong in her life and everything that could've gone wrong in her life just by being total luxurious peace. Nothing to kill, no friends to save, no sister to protect. Just an immense feeling of belonging as she floated through the air as weightless as a cloud.
As a solitary tree banch tapped against her window, Buffy idly wondered if Heaven would let her back in. Now that her friends had pulled her out of paradise she supposed paradise couldn't care less if she died. Maybe it had been a one time offer...
The nightmares made it worse each night. They were exactly the same, she would feel her body remould itself and allow her aching eyes to focus on the dark wood directly above her. She would gasp and croak with fear as her hands scrabbled at it before mustering all the strength from her ill used muscles. And in the nightmares she never got out, was never freed from her imprisonment.
The blonde slayer sat up and pulled the covers more tightly around herself. A glance at the clock by her bed confirmed her guess it was the early hours of the morning and she gave an involuntary shiver. She always felt so cold now, so different. In high school she had been down with the slayage, ready to fight the next vamp or demon with an arsenal of quick wit and sharp weapons but now... Now older and wiser, she knew something inside her hadn't been brought back. She could see it in her eyes when she looked in the mirror.
Tendrils of light began to sneak in and a fleeting memory greeted her heavy lidded eyes and she lay back against the plump white pillows. Her last thoughts before she fell back into her dreams were of where she would be sent next and her hope that she wouldn't return.
