She staggered back again, her fledgling wings struggling ineffectively to keep the young girl and the heavy sword she held onto from falling to the ground from sheer exhaustion. She felt as if she had been moving for days yet she knew that could not be true. Lady Moon, the mortal enemy of Lord Sun, sat as high as it had when she had started her flight. As she heard the voices behind her draw closer, she turned and tightened her grip on the sword, she continued to run.
-
His breath came in ragged gasps, his thoughts mirrored those of the men surrounding him “How can she keep this up?” They had been running for hours yet she still continued the track she had led them along hadn’t been the easiest walk along a main road. Yet she still continued and they still followed, although none knew where she was leading them.
-
She continued running, she had to stop soon, but for now she needed to lose those behind her. Long ago she had lost all thought of where she was going she knew she had to keep moving.
-
He stopped, confused by the sudden change of scenery. One moment he had been running through a field, following her by watching for the shine of her almost white hair. Then he was running alone, the others had disappeared. No longer was he running through the open field, now he travelled between impassive walls of leaves, he looked up to see Lady Moon, blinding in her brilliance, showing his path ahead with her eerie light. Up ahead he saw the outline of a young girl running, he saw the sheen of her hair. After a moment of looking around again, he turned and continued the chase.
-
A hiss of frustration escaped her lips, another dead end. She did not care how she had gotten into the maze; all she cared about was being able to escape those still following behind. She turned back until she reached a fork in her path, without stopping to think she dived down the right hand path and continued the flight.
-
Above, Lady Moon continued her silent watch of the chase. She watched as both swore in frustration at each dead end, as he speed up when he caught a glimpse of her, as she run heedlessly, not noticing her surroundings anymore, only the path before her and the knowledge that she would have to rest soon. Through all of this Lady Moon watched.
-
She stumbled, tripping over her own feet again as exhaustion took its toll. She still dragged the sword behind her, knowing that she would have to turn and fight soon for escape was becoming more and more impossible. She would have to fight soon, and she would rather not do it unarmed. As she reached another dead end she turned and stopped, there was only one of her pursuers left, but he was between her and the exit. She waited, attempting to regain as much strength as possible before he reached her.
-
He slowed as he drew closer, she was trapped, there was only one escape from this path and he blocked it. He walked closer to where she was standing, she didn’t look up as he neared, she remained facedown, her wings no longer attempting to hold her up but now resting against her back. Above them, lady Moon continued to watch.
-
Lady Moon continued to watch, she saw her stop, him draw closer. Nothing stirred as he neared. Then, far off, the sound of a wolf howling was heard.
-
She glanced up he had stopped a few spaces in front of her. He was completely still, behind the dull exhaustion his eyes burned bright with triumph. Yet he still made no move to step forward. He stood, and waited
-
He waited, there was no way for her to escape and now that she had been caught there was no need to hurry. She regarded him calmly. The sword hung loosely from her hands. Far off, the sound of a wolf was heard again.
-
Lady Moon waited, the chase had ended and now everything was in place. They both stood waiting, neither sure what to say, both staying from attacking for the moment. Lady Moon watched.
-
She glanced to her side, another now stood on the path. She was tall with hair the purest of black. She spoke, and with her voice came the sound of waves crashing against a distant shore.
-
“The chase has gone on long enough.” She said her eyes boring into the girl’s. “It is time for you to step forward, my daughter.” The girl returned the woman’s gaze but said nothing, nor did she give and indication that she had heard the words. The woman faded from view.
-
He was the first of the pair to speak, “Silia.” Is was not a question, he was simply stating her name. She turned to face him, devoid of any emotion she watched him. After a moment he continued, “Why?” She watched him for a moment longer, then her hands tightened slightly around her sword as she replied. “Why not?” She then launched herself at him.
-
He stepped back, the surprise of her sudden attack negated by his years of training. He watched as she dropped the sword and narrowed his eyes slightly as she abandoned it, not noticing the words she spoke under her breath, or the change that was happening on the ground beneath him. She then tackled him, surprised at her strange tactics he fell backwards, and slid in the greasy substance that now covered he floor. He watched as she moved closer, she seemed to walk through the grease as if it wasn’t there. She retrieved his sword from where it was fallen and stood above him. “Why?” He asked again, Silia stared down at him and replied, “Because it is needed.” The blade fell.
-
Lady Moon watched the fight, she saw the spell Silia had woven that had proved the man’s death, she had seen the end and had heard Silia’s words. Lady Moon smiled and shook her hair from her face. Yes, she would do perfectly.
