Kate obened her pack, taking out a small bottle full of a yellowish paste. "This is a salve for John, who lives in the cottage by the church. Give him my good wishes. I think-" she bit her lip, uncertain. "I think he was my father." She turned away, ashamed of herself. She knew she was a bastard child. She had just never known who's bastard.

He nodded. "Stay here, girl. I'll be back. You have my word," with that, he headed back to the village, salve hidden within the folds of his cloak.

Kae looked around the room. She seemed so small, crouched up. She was afraid, afraid of capture, of burning. Of death.

He moved quickly, like a shadow through the forest. Going close to hte church could mean capture, but it didn't matter, he made a promise.
Beside, he was bored. He needed a challenge.

Kate was afraid of how little knowledge she possesed. Who was this man? What did he want? Few men would risk their own lives unless there was something in it for them. Yet she had nothing to offer, just a few herbs. She was not powerful, just a healer.

He walked purposefully towards the church.
"The witch escaped," a priest said to him.
"What a pity."
"I suspect you might be involved."
"really?" He asked. "And what will you be doing with this suspicion? Nothing, perhaps?"
"If you are involved, the wrath of God..."
"Spare me you're drivel, Arthur," he spat. "You and i both know this has nothing to do wiht God and more to do with you're own hunger for power."
"You should have died along with that witch that seduced you."
"You should have died with the witch hunters that took her," he growled. "I know you came hunting me, Arthur. Know this. Retribution is coming," He walked past him, past the church, then around the back o fthe building next door, entering from there. He'd have to move quicker than expected.

John turned quickly, wincing at the pain from his wound. "Kate?" he asked anxiously, peering through eyes that had lost most of their sight. "Who are you?"

"A friend," he said, pulling the vial out and handing it to him. "She asked me to deliver this. She's safe, but the witch hunters were closing in."

"Thank you," the old man cried, taking the vial and looking closely at him. "Thank you. Keep her safe." He paused. "She is smart, that one. But she is young. If you lay a finger on that girl," in a few seconds the old man had gone from frail to firm and threatening.

"No fear of that," I chuckled. "I have feeling she'd be somewhat...negative to any attempt to hurt her in any way."

"She'd hurl you across the room, you can be sure," the old man replied. "Now, please go. Do not leave her for long. Too much of her life was spent alone."

"I will take care of her," he promised, leaving silently, heading for the fores, watching to make sure he wasn't followed.

"You had better," John muttered, turning back to his work.

He moved through the underbrush noiselessly. the time spent in the east was well worth it.
He made it to the ruins, checked for any followers, then headed down the stairs.

Kate looked up sharply, afraid. She placed her pack out of sight and huddled in the corner.
