Ten years ago, a deadly virus wiped out most of humanity, leaving only those who had not yet reached puberty behind. Kids were left to fend for themselves in this post-apocolyptic world; a place where demons and vampires ruled and loved the fresh meat that roamed without protection.
There were great divides in what was left of the world. Cities lay in ruins, and vampires and humans fought for rulership over them. Peace has begun to settle but who knows how long it'll stay this way?
My name is Nicki Next and I was 9 years old when my parents were killed by the virus. My sister Katelyn, who was 12, became my guardian and we stuck together like glue. We became hunters, armed with weapons and books that our parents had left us, and by the time I was 15, I already had scars to show for my battles.
Now I'm 19, my sister is 22, and we're exploring what's left of the world for some kind of explanation for what happened. There are rumours that it was a virus cooked up by the things that go bump in the night, and there are rumours that it'll happen again.
It's out job to stop that happening, even if it kills us in the process.
(This is just a prologue of sorts; the thread is based on a tv show called Jeremiah and I wanted to put an explanation so people weren't confused. I thought it'd be a cool idea to explore a post apocolyptic world, and have a little exaggerated baddies vs goodies thing going on. If you wanna go on the hunt for the big bads behind all this then introduce your character and we'll meet up, but if you wanna be one of the big bads... well, get cracking on the evil!)

My life sucks.
When the adults died, i was left alone. nothing new, right? Unfortunately, i got picked up by a bunch of demons looking to cash in. I was ten when they took me to the slave camps. By twelve I'd learnt that the only way I could live now was to be obediant. I did everything they told me, cooked up their meet. I became something of a physician, trying to make up for the lives I'd fed to the demons by saving my fellow slaves when they're injured, or sick. they started calling me Doc.
At fifteen, i was put on the kill teams, hunting down my own kind for the demons to feed on. they'd gotten fat, they didn't think we'd escape. We couldn't truth to tell. We'd lived under their 'protection' so long, we didn't know any other way.
I'm sixteen now. there's talks of another 'culling'. I think it's going to happen again. they've assured us that we'll be spared as long as we don't escape. that's good enough for me.
To all those outside, I'm sorry. I can't do anything to save you. But I'll save those that come after you.

It was getting near dark when we hit the outskirts of Los Angeles, and though I'd seen it all before, it was still weird to see it as a broken city. Buildings were no longer tall and majestic, and the last few rays of the sun glinted off cracked windows.
"Nicki, get your butt over here, we've gotta set up for the night," I heard my sister say.
"Yeah, sure."
I walked over and helped set up a campfire, sitting by it and watching as Katelyn made make shift beds nearby. I felt my mind drifting to what life had been like before the virus, to a time when our parents would take us camping in lush green forests, and we could laugh and talk and burn marshmallows. The ten years that had passed seemed like nothing. I still felt like that small, scared, 9 year old.
"You need to sleep," Katelyn said quietly, recognising my faraway look. "I'll stand guard for a few hours and then wake you up so we can switch, okay?"
Without any argument, I got into my bed and closed my eyes. "Night, Kate."
"Night, Nick. Don't let the bed bugs bite."
I smiled. "While I'm asleep, that's your job."
I heard a laugh and then within seconds I was out.

I slipped through the shadows coutiously, harpoon ready. the master wanted some live ones tonight. I think they were prepping for this next 'cullling' whatever that was. Didn't matter. All i had to do was what i was told and I'd be safe. That was all that mattered in this world.

Third Person:
Katelyn kept the fire alive as the darkness crept over them, every so often letting her glance fall on her baby sister. She could hear gentle snores coming from the young brunette and it made her giggle to herself.
The moon hung low in the air and Katelyn lay back on the ground, looking up at the sky. It was a beautiful night out, and the wind was just the right temperature to make her sleepy.
Involuntarily her eyes began to close, and soon both Next girls were fast asleep.

The world was huge. At least to the little 12 year old me. There were to many things out there that could hurt me, or my brothers. I couldn't even remember my parents, I had always remembered the hard time we had gathering food. I had snuck out of our little hidding spot to get something for Brandon, who looked sick, and was burning up. I was the fastest, so I would stand the best chance against anything. But I crouched in a corner, watching and listening to anything that might attack.

I glanced at the two sleeping girls. wouldn't even need the harpoon. Just slap th amulets on them and they'll be at the camps. Easy. they'll be safe then, at least.

Nicki POV:
I slowly began to wake out of habit, my body only being used to short periods of sleep, and I sighed when I saw Kate was in the land of nod. I knew it probably wasn't on purpose, but we could be killed, didn't she get that? She had clearer memories of the early days, when blood had run like water, but she could still be so irresponsible.
Stretching, I got up, and sat by the campfire. The flames were starting to dwindle, so I concentrated on getting it burning again.

I noticed the two girls, they were close, I could tell, then I noticed the guy with a gun looking thing. "WATCH OUT!" I yelled from my little corner and ducked out of sight.

I spun around, trying to pick out where the voice had come from and why they'd shouted something like that. Quickly standing up, I looked over to check Katelyn was still okay, and grabbed my hunting knife.
"Come out, come out, wherever you are," I sing songed.
