Cleveland Buffy stared at the Slayers she was currently teaching. She knew the complaints. She was too hard. She pushed more than they had. They wanted to survive, right?
‘Were you always this blind?’ Buffy gave a deep sigh as she signalled the end of the exercise period. Now the ‘kiddies’ were moving on, she had an hour free before the next lot. An hour to think of how empty her life was. Yay.
“You look down,” Buffy froze. No. Freaking. Way.
“Kayley? What are you doing here?” Buffy asked. Kayley shuffled nervously.
“Well, it was this or get crushed on the Dojo roof,” Kayley joked weakly. Buffy saw passed that though.
“I’m going to kill Willow.”
“It’s okay,” Kayley said. “They had…kind of a reason.”
“Oh?”
“They thought I cast a spell on you.”
“WHAT? WILLOW ROSENBERG GET YOUR ASS IN HERE!”
“Thanks a lot Kayley,” Willow mumbled as she walked ing. Buffy glared.
“You were listening?”
“It was Dawn’s idea!”
“Willow!”
“Dawn!”
“Oops…”
“Out,” Buffy said. “Both of you. And no eavesdropping.”
“But…”
“OUT!”
“Stupid sister.”
“Stupid Buffy.”
“Out!” Buffy said, closing and locking the door. “I swear, those two…”
“They’re just trying to take care of you.”
“I know, I know, that’s why I can’t stay too mad at them,” Buffy said. “So…how are you?” awkwardness setting in.
“I’m…better than I have been,” Kayley said.
“Oh?” Buffy asked. If Francois had hurt her…
“Yeah,” Kayley said. “I’ve been…pretty down lately. Kinda pulled away from Francois. He…kinda dumped me.”
“He’s dead,” Buffy said venomously. She wondered if Willow would let her borrow The Shovel.
“No, it’s okay,” Kayley said. “If he hadn’t, I wouldn’t be standing here, probably about to make the biggest fool of myself ever.”
“How do you mean?” Buffy asked curiously.
“I…um, that is to say…” Kayley wanted the earth to open up and swallow her. “I think…no, I…”
“Kayley,” Buffy said. “Just say it.”
“I’minlovewithyou,” Kayley blurted. Buffy stared at her a moment. Kayley used that moment to kiss her, deeply, before she lost her nerve. “Sorry, I…”
“Don’t be,” Buffy said. “I’m not.”
“Huh…” was all she had time to get out before Buffy kissed her back. “Wow…” Kayley breathed as they separated. Buffy smiled.
“Y’know this past week’s been sucky,” Buffy said.
“Oh?”
“Yeah,” the Slayer said. “I’ve been really down and couldn’t…no, I knew why. I just didn’t do anything about it.”
“Can I ask why?” Kayley asked, looking into Buffy’s eyes.
“I…didn’t want this to be some sort of rebound relationship where someone ends up getting hurt,” Buffy said.
“No rebound here,” Kayley said. “You?” Buffy looked at her a moment.
“Na.”
“Can we get back to the smoochies then?” Kayley asked innocently. Buffy hooked an arm around her waist.
“I think we can managed that,” she said.
End.
